GROWING IN RELATIONAL WISDOM
Meeting Needs Through Reflective Listening
Let’s test your reflective listening skills! Here is the scenario:
A Director is pleased to tell a family she has found a community that mandates masks, just as they were seeking. When she shares the good news, the mom asks, “Are they wearing masks because they HAVE to, or because they WANT to? I only want to be in a community that’s doing it out of a willingness, not an obligation.”
As you can imagine, this probably frustrated the Director and left her feeling deflated. She thought she had met the mom’s needs, but the mom was seeking more than what she realized. How should the Director respond? Let’s recall the skills of reflective or RADAR listening.
- Identify the feeling
- Identify the thought
- Gently summarize
- Ask a question
The Director could use reflective listening to respond, “What I hear you saying is that it is important to you to have a like-minded community both in action and conviction. I want to see if I can meet your needs. Can you share with me why you feel so strongly about this?” This approach allows the mom to contemplate a value question, and it gives the Director clarity on the mom's reasoning behind her request.
As Directors begin to settle in community, this does not mean community is settled. Continue to use your reflective listening to coach your Directors to truly hear the needs of their families.
“After a crazy summer, tears welled up today watching my daughter’s Challenge class meet outside. It reminded me of how, just like the church is not a building, our education is not dependent on a building either. Thank you, CC, for all the ways you’ve equipped us and the Directors we serve over the summer. I keep hearing Directors say, ‘It is hard, but I haven’t felt alone in this.’ ...That’s because of YOUR leadership, compassion, and communication. THANK YOU!"
